Fly fishing Knots

~ Equipment and Clothing ~

Basic Equipment
Rods 7 1/2 feet to 8 1/2 feet in length with line weights from 3 to 5 weight are the most appropriate for the majority of the streams in the Smokies. You should have enough rod to be able to cast some weighted nymphs.

Reels should be balanced to your rod and have a line weight to match the rod for best performance of your outfit.

Felt soled wading boots and or waders are highly recommended for the types of streams you will be fishing here in the Smokies. Light weight breathables or wet wading with felt soled boots are appropriate for warm weather wading and neoprene waders are best suited for early and late season wading.

Hat for head protection and to reduce glare, best hats being wide brimmed or long billed ball caps.

Polarized sunglasses for aid in spotting fish and most important eye protection from a stray cast.

Fishing vest can be a essential piece of equipment to carry your line clippers, fly boxes, tippet and other miscellaneous equipment you can't do with out

Always bring a bottle of water with you, for dehydration can sneak up on you.

General Clothing

Clothing should be appropriate for the time of year in which you plan to visit. It is a good practice to bring layers with which you can put on and take off as to reach a comfortable temperature. "You can't put on what you don't have."

Also keep in mind the color of your clothing as you choose clothing for your trip, you will want to choose clothing that matches the natural surroundings as these color clothes will not alarm fish of your presence.

Recommended colors for clothing are as follows: tans, greens, browns, sky blues or your favorite camouflage shirt.

Be prepared for the worst of weather, also you should bring a poncho, rain jacket or some other means of staying dry if mother nature decides to rain on you while you are fishing.
